What If There Were Only Three Quarters in a NFL Game?

Since Fantasy Football is now over, I got a little bored so I decided to review what the NFL standings for the 2016 season would look like if only three quarters were played.

Note: if there were any ties after the third quarter, I used the team that scored the most in the fourth quarter to declare the winner, acting as if the fourth quarter was overtime.

Here are the the results.  In parenthesis is what the actual 2016 result was for each team so you can see the difference.

AFC East

Patriots 14-2 (14-2)

Bills 9-7 (7-9)

Dolphins 8-8 (10-6)

Jets 4-12 (5-11)

AFC North

Bengals 9-7 (6-9-1)

Ravens 8-8 (8-8)

Steelers 8-8 (11-5)

Browns 4-12 (1-15)

AFC South

Colts 9-7 (8-8)

Titans 7-9 (9-7)

Texans 7-9 (9-7)

Jaguars 5-11 (3-13)

AFC West

Chiefs 11-5 (12-4)

Chargers 8-8 (5-11)

Broncos 7-9 (9-7)

Raiders 7-9 (12-4)

NFC East

Cowboys 11-5 (13-3)

Giants 10-6 (11-5)

Redskins 8-8 (8-7-1)

Eagles 8-8 (7-9)

NFC North

Packers 10-6 (10-6)

Lions 9-7 (9-7)

Vikings 7-9 (8-8)

Bears 5-11 (3-13)

NFC South

Falcons 13-3 (11-5)

Buccaneers 9-7 (9-7)

Panthers 9-7 (6-10)

Saints 7-9 (7-9)

NFC West

Seahawks 10-6 (10-5-1)

Cardinals 8-8 (7-8-1)

Rams 5-11 (4-12)

49ers 2-14 (2-14)

Overall Result:

-Of the 32 NFL teams, 7 teams (Patriots, Ravens, Packers, Lions, Buccaneers, Saints, 49ers) ended up with the exact same schedule that they ended up with in the 2016 season, which showed that regardless of win or loss, the fourth quarter did not play a huge impact on these teams 2016 season.

-Four teams (Bengals, Browns, Chargers, Panthers) ended up with 3 more wins when you take out the fourth quarter, which shows they struggled in the fourth quarters during the 2016 season when they had the lead.  Might explain why none of them made the playoffs.

-Taking out the fourth quarter, the Raiders had 5 more losses than their actual 2016 total.  This shows they played behind a lot, but the team was clutch in the fourth quarter.  They will really miss Derek Carr in the playoffs.

-The NFC ended up with the exact same teams in the playoffs while the AFC had 4 different teams that would have made it if the fourth quarter did not count.  This included two different division winners (Bengals and Colts) and two different wild card teams (Bills, Ravens).

Here is how the playoffs would have looked:

AFC:

1). Patriots
2). Chiefs
3). Colts
4). Bengals
5). Bills
6). Ravens

NFC:

1). Falcons
2). Cowboys
3). Seahawks
4). Packers
5). Giants
6). Lions

Just goes to show, all teams need to make sure they play the full four quarters.  Never give up because every game can impact where your team ends up.
