Remembering What ‘MV’ Stands for in MVP

MVP stands for Most Valuable Player.  When discussing the MVP race, I think people forget what the ‘MV’ stands for because people tend to want to pick someone from the best team in the league to win rather than choosing someone who is the most valuable player for their team.  The best team in the league might have numerous good players, but no one that clearly stands out about the rest.

Below are 5  people who are currently being most talked about in the news as being the main players considered to be the MVP for the 2016 season for the NFL.  I will provide the reasons why I think they should or should not be the MVP.

1). Tom Brady

Tom Brady is a exceptional football player and will go down in history as one of the greatest (if not THE greatest) quarterback of all-time, but that does not mean he is the MVP of THIS season. The New England Patriots were able to win three out of their first four games with him being suspended and showed they are capable of winning without him in the lineup. While Brady definitely gives them a better chance of being more successful and winning a Super Bowl, he is not showing himself as the most valuable player this year.

2). and 3). Ezekiel Elliott and Dak Prescott

These two players kind of have to be mentioned together because both of them have had remarkable rookie seasons while leading the Dallas Cowboys to success, but it is hard to really call one of them more valuable than the other.  Would Elliott have been this successful with someone else behind center?  Would Prescott be as successful without a run game to open up the field for him?  If I had to choose between the two, I would choose Elliott to the be the MVP because I think he is making a bigger impact on the Cowboys than Prescott.

4). Matt Ryan

Matt Ryan is being talked about because of the big numbers he has been putting up this year, but I do not agree that this automatically makes you a MVP.  If this is one of the qualifications, then isn’t Drew Brees being talked about more?  While Ryan is doing a better job this season than he did last season, that does mean he is the most valuable player in the league this year.

5). Derek Carr

Derek Carr is the person I think is the most valuable player in the league this year.  The Oakland Raiders would be nowhere without Carr.  It starts and ends with him.  Having one person so important to your team is the thing we should be looking for when doing MVP voting and Carr is the most important player in the Raiders’ locker room.

Final Thoughts

Yes, things may change before the year ends because we still have a lot of weeks to go, but as long as Derek Carr keeps helping find ways to lead the Raiders to success, he needs to be the 2016 NFL MVP because he is truly the most valuable player to his team.
